K25213 - Sosaku kokeshi from Tōhoku 東北
This vintage Sōsaku Kokeshi 創作こけし comes from the Tōhoku region 東北, the historic heartland of Japanese kokeshi tradition.
The doll has a tall, slender wooden body topped by an expressive rounded head, with delicately painted features and a traditional coiffure. Its most striking decoration is the painted plum blossom motif 梅, with soft white blossoms, touches of red, and muted green leaves arranged over the natural grain of the wood.
In Japan, the plum blossom (ume 梅) is especially meaningful. As one of the first flowers to bloom at the end of winter, often while snow is still present, it has long symbolized perseverance, renewal, hope, and the arrival of spring. Its restrained beauty is particularly suited to the warm, rustic character of this wooden doll.
Unlike traditional regional kokeshi, Sōsaku Kokeshi developed as a more individual form of artistic expression, allowing makers greater freedom in shape, carving, colouring, and decorative themes. This example beautifully combines that creative approach with motifs deeply rooted in Japanese seasonal culture.
With its gentle expression, naturally aged wooden surface, and elegant flowering plum design, this piece carries the nostalgic charm of vintage Tōhoku folk craft and would make a lovely addition to a kokeshi, Japanese folk art, or vintage Japanese décor collection.
