K25159 - Togatta Kokeshi by Noboru Wagatsuma 我妻昇

This Togatta kokeshi by Noboru Wagatsuma 我妻昇 (b. 1983) is a striking contemporary interpretation that blends traditional influences with bold, graphic expression.

The doll features a large, softly rounded head with an elegant, minimalist face. The expression is serene and refined, defined by long, sweeping eyebrows, gently closed eyes, and a small red mouth. The facial design is intentionally simplified, giving it a calm, almost meditative presence. The hair is stylized with clean black side locks and a small central fringe, while the crown is accented with rhythmic red brushstrokes that add movement and visual interest.

The body is slender and elongated, decorated with a dynamic red-and-white linear pattern reminiscent of wood grain or flowing water. This pattern creates a sense of vertical motion, contrasting with a single horizontal black band that anchors the composition at the center. The strong use of red, black, and natural wood tones reflects both traditional kokeshi palettes and a distinctly modern, graphic sensibility.

Born in Sendai in 1983, Noboru Wagatsuma represents a new generation of kokeshi artists. After studying environmental engineering and pursuing music as a singer-songwriter, he turned to kokeshi making in 2015, apprenticing under Hayasaka Masahiro. He completed his training in 2018 and quickly developed his own distinctive style, combining precise craftsmanship with contemporary design elements.
