K25132 - RARE Sōsaku Kokeshi by Sansaku Sekiguchi 関口三作
This RARE sōsaku kokeshi titled 「武人」(Bujin, “Warrior”) is a striking work by Sansaku Sekiguchi, inspired by the ancient haniwa clay figures of Japan’s Kofun period. Carved entirely from wood, the figure adopts a bold, architectural silhouette, with stacked cylindrical forms that echo the solemn presence of haniwa warriors once placed around burial mounds as guardians.
The surface is left largely unpainted, allowing the warm patina and natural grain of the wood to take center stage. Delicately incised lines suggest armor, cords, and garments, while the helmet-like head and sharply angled eyes convey quiet strength and vigilance. The restrained facial expression is characteristic of Sekiguchi’s work—emotion is not overstated, but deeply felt through proportion, balance, and posture.
Born in 1925 in Gunma Prefecture, Sansaku Sekiguchi is uniquely recognized as the only officially certified Master of Creative Kokeshi by the Japanese government and a three-time recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award. His creations are celebrated for their minimalist beauty, flawless construction, and profound emotional resonance. This figure exemplifies his mastery, transforming an ancient sculptural tradition into a modern, contemplative form within the sōsaku kokeshi movement.
With its historical reference, disciplined carving, and dignified presence, Bujin stands as both a sculptural homage to Japan’s distant past and a refined expression of mid-century creative kokeshi at its highest level.
