K25126 - Sosaku Shingata kokeshi from Aizu Bandai-san 会津
This Shingata kokeshi originates from Aizu Bandai-san 会津磐梯山 and was made by the artist 克幸 (Katsuyuki). It beautifully combines the warmth of traditional kokeshi form with a strong sense of regional landscape and storytelling.
The doll features a tall, elegant cylindrical body painted with a scenic depiction of Mount Bandai, often called the “Mirror of Aizu.” The landscape shows layered mountains, calm waters, and terraced fields stretching into the foreground, evoking the serene rural environment of the Aizu region. The brushwork is gentle and illustrative, giving the piece the feeling of a painted travel memory rather than a decorative pattern.
The head is rounded and softly expressive, with a cheerful, childlike face—arched brows, crescent-shaped eyes, and a small red mouth—adding warmth and approachability. The natural wood grain remains visible throughout, reinforcing the handcrafted quality and rustic charm associated with Aizu folk art.
As a Sōsaku kokeshi, this piece is not bound to strict traditional styles but instead reflects Katsuyuki’s personal interpretation, using the kokeshi form as a canvas to celebrate local identity. It stands as both a folk object and a miniature landscape painting, making it especially appealing to collectors who appreciate regional themes, nostalgia, and the quiet poetry of Japanese countryside life.
