K25102 - Togatta Kokeshi by Tomio Sato 佐藤富雄

This kokeshi features the classic elements of the Togatta tradition: a slender body adorned with bold red floral motifs, accented by green leaves, and a wide head with delicate, symmetrical facial features and a striking red-and-black crown motif. The doll reflects Tomio’s disciplined brushwork and deep respect for traditional forms, refined over decades of solo craftsmanship.

Born in Togatta-Shinchi on March 19, 1928, Tomio Sato was the eldest son of renowned kokeshi craftsman Bunsuke Sato. From an early age, he trained in woodworking, first crafting items like thread spools and tops before transitioning to kokeshi. His first known kokeshi was a bean-sized netsuke doll, ordered by collector Suzuki Bontaro.

After serving in a munitions factory during World War II, he returned to kokeshi-making alongside his father and brother in Togatta Onsen. He also passed on his craft to future artisans like Kesakichi Sato. Though he briefly worked with other craftsmen, he primarily operated solo after Bunsuke’s passing in 1977.

Tomio’s kokeshi are faithful to the Bunsuke lineage, though he occasionally restored older models, especially during the late 1980s. Despite challenges, including deteriorating dye quality in the late ’80s and an eye injury in later life, he remained a dedicated craftsman until his retirement around 2008. He passed away in 2016 at the age of 89.
