This is a traditional Nanbu-style kokeshi by Susumago Morizo (煤孫盛造, 1950–), a third-generation craftsman from Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture. Meticulously turned and finished, this kokeshi exemplifies the understated elegance and clean lines characteristic of the Nanbu (南部) tradition, particularly the kinakina type unique to the region.

Made from natural wood with no added coloration beyond delicate red and yellow turning lines, this piece draws attention to the fine grain and smooth surface of the timber—a hallmark of Nanbu aesthetics. The form is simple yet refined, with a gently flared base and a rounded head, giving it a warm, organic presence. The doll's expression is calm and friendly, with neatly painted side-parted bangs and a soft, smiling mouth.

Morizo began making kokeshi in 1981 under the guidance of his father, Sumeso Sanetaro, and inherited the family craft after his father's passing in 1984. His works continue the legacy of the Sumeso family lineage, particularly the kinakina kokeshi style passed down from his grandfather Mokichi. He is also known for inventive designs, such as hat-wearing figures inspired by Miyazawa Kenji.

This piece is a fine representation of the Nanbu tradition—quiet, tactile, and deeply rooted in the natural beauty of wood.
