K25094 - Togatta by Tetsuro Sato 佐藤哲郎
This is a classic Togatta-style kokeshi crafted by Tetsuro Sato (佐藤哲郎, 1932–2022), a respected traditional kokeshi artisan from the Miyagi region. His work is characterized by its refined simplicity and warmth, staying true to the aesthetics of the Togatta lineage while showcasing his personal touch.
The doll features the distinctive Togatta traits: a slender cylindrical body, a large round head with finely painted hair and expressive eyes, and a softly smiling face that exudes a gentle charm. The top of the head is adorned with red radiating petals, a traditional motif in this style. The body is decorated with an elegant arrangement of red plum blossoms (ume), symbolizing resilience and beauty — a common theme in Japanese folk art.
Tetsuro Sato was born into a lineage of kokeshi artisans in Togatta Onsen, the heartland of traditional kokeshi. His father was Sato Yoshiya, and his uncle, Sato Yoshinosuke, under whom he formally trained in woodturning beginning in 1947. After completing his training, he established his own workshop and began crafting new-style kokeshi and toys. Around 1956, he returned to traditional forms following his father's reentry into the craft.
Throughout his career, Tetsuro was known for his exemplary woodturning technique, with shavings flying effortlessly from his lathe in long, flowing ribbons. He played an active role in reviving traditional wooden toys like the “Tiger” and “Crane” in 1975, fulfilling the wishes of collectors and preserving cultural heritage.
He was also a passionate teacher, mentoring numerous apprentices including Omori Hisakazu, Midorikawa Masato, Abe Yoshi, and Ogawa Fumio, and even supported the "Traditional Kokeshi Craftsman Successor Development Project" in his later years.
