K25085 - Kijiyama kokeshi by Masanori Onodera 小野寺正徳
This is a traditional Kijiyama-style kokeshi crafted by Masanori Onodera (小野寺正徳, 1948–2018), a respected artisan from Akita Prefecture known for preserving and elevating the Kijiyama tradition. Measuring 25 cm, this piece is a striking example of his refined artistry and regional heritage.
The doll features a softly rounded head with a serene, slightly smiling expression—eyes gently closed in peaceful repose, framed by brushed black hair with subtle detailing. Onodera’s skillful hand brings a sense of warmth and tranquility to the facial expression, a hallmark of his work.
The cylindrical body is delicately flared and richly adorned with a floral kimono motif rendered in vivid red, black, and deep indigo, accented by leaves and blossoms in a traditional Japanese aesthetic. This floral arrangement is framed within a kimono-like border, further reinforcing the figure’s dignified presence. The surface of the wood retains a natural grain texture, complementing the bold yet elegant design and reflecting Onodera’s preference for using locally sourced woods such as yew (ichii) or dogwood.
Trained under the esteemed Miharu Fumio, Onodera combined classic Kijiyama traits—such as simple contours and ringed necklines—with a modern sensitivity to line and form. His work is widely admired for harmonizing tradition with creative expression, and his kokeshi dolls are cherished not only as toys or decorative objects but as cultural artifacts representing the spirit and history of Akita’s craft heritage.
Onodera passed away in 2018, but his legacy continues through his beautifully balanced creations, which embody both the quiet strength and delicate artistry of the Kijiyama kokeshi tradition.
