K25081 - Tsuchiyu kokeshi by Yukinori Jinnohara 陳野原幸紀
This is a traditional Tsuchiyu kokeshi crafted by Yukinori Jinnohara (陳野原幸紀, 1947–), a respected artisan known for preserving the refined characteristics of the Tsuchiyu style.
Born on December 5, 1947, in Tsuchiyu, Fukushima Prefecture, Jinnohara was the fifth son of farmers Kenzo and Fujie Chinnohara. Deeply influenced by his eldest brother, Kazunori Jinnohara, also a kokeshi maker, Yukinori’s interest in the craft blossomed early. However, it wasn’t until 1971—after breaking his leg in a skiing accident—that he turned seriously toward woodturning and kokeshi making under his brother’s guidance.
Jinnohara initially followed the Sakuma Kumematsu lineage that his brother practiced. Over time, as collectors brought him vintage Kumematsu dolls and historical references, he became a sought-after craftsman for restoring and reproducing these classic styles. His kokeshi are characterized by clean forms, warm wood tones, and delicate hand-painted motifs that evoke a nostalgic elegance rooted in Tsuchiyu tradition.
Beyond his work as a craftsman, Jinnohara also runs the restaurant Hisago and serves his community as the head of the Tsuchiyu Kokeshi Craftsmen's Association and chairman of the Tsuchiyu Onsen Town District Autonomy Promotion Council. His kokeshi dolls reflect not only artistic mastery but also a deep commitment to the cultural life of his hometown.
