K25076 - Traditional Kijiyama by Kenichi Kitayama 北山賢一
This Kijiyama-style kokeshi was crafted by Kenichi Kitayama (北山賢一, 1947–), a dedicated artisan from Akita Prefecture known for his quiet refinement and steady contribution to the revival of the Kijiyama tradition. Born on July 16, 1947, in the rural community of Hayasaki, Asamai, he is the eldest son of Kitayama Seisuke, a farmer in Hiraka-gun. His creative journey began after marrying Kumiko, daughter of Suzuki Torada of Omonogawa-cho, in 1973.
Originally trained in bowl woodworking under master Hiwatashi Shoji in Odate (1975–1977), Kitayama transitioned to kokeshi-making under the guidance of Abe Heishiro beginning in 1978. He began producing dolls under his own name around 1982 and became independent in 1984, establishing his workshop in Yokote City, where he still continues his craft.
This particular kokeshi exemplifies the graceful minimalism and organic aesthetic of the Kijiyama lineage. The doll's slender form is accentuated by delicate floral motifs in soft red and purple tones, hand-painted with a warm and gentle touch. The serene facial expression is signature to the style, simple, contemplative, and endearing.
Adding a unique family dynamic to his work, Kenichi's wife Kumiko has been involved in the painting and coloring process of the dolls since around 1987, making each piece a collaborative expression of artistry and heritage.
