K25067 - Traditional Togatta Kokeshi by Takeji Yamao 山尾武治

This is a traditional Togatta-style kokeshi created by the esteemed artisan Takeji Yamao (山尾武治, 1902–1971). This doll exemplifies the bold visual language of the Togatta tradition, with its sharply defined features, rich brushwork, and iconic chrysanthemum-inspired motifs.

Takeji Yamao was born on June 30, 1901, in Yumoto Yakushi, Akiu Town, as the fifth son of Yamao Kesasaburo, proprietor of the Mitoya Inn. In 1916, at the age of 15, he began training in woodturning under the renowned master Sato Sanzo.

In pursuit of mastering his craft, Takeji went on to train under Yusa Kotaro in Naruko around 1921. Kotaro had taught woodturning at the Akiu Village Crafts School, but despite Takeji’s growing skills, he struggled to find employment at local workshops.

Yamao’s work as a woodturner extended beyond just dolls—he remained active in various forms of lathe work while steadily producing kokeshi. His dolls are distinguished by their commanding visual rhythm: broad, sweeping bands of black, geometric floral motifs, and a face with soft, distant features framed by accentuated bangs and side locks. The rich black pigment contrasts beautifully with the natural warmth of the wood grain, giving the doll a quiet intensity.
