This striking Yajirō kokeshi by Manabu Niiyama exemplifies the strength and simplicity of the traditional style native to Shiroishi, Miyagi Prefecture. Crafted with rich, dark wood, the doll features vivid horizontal rokuro-moyo (lathe lines) in bold red across both body and head — a hallmark of the Yajirō tradition. The face is serene and understated, with delicate brushwork forming the expressive almond-shaped eyes, rounded cheeks, and faintly smiling lips, all rendered in soft black ink.

The minimalistic composition and lack of floral or decorative motifs give the doll a quiet dignity. The craftsmanship shows a deep respect for the natural grain of the wood, which is accentuated through a clear polish that gives the surface a warm, smooth luster. The harmonious proportions and balanced linework reflect Niiyama's seasoned skill and devotion to traditional form.

Manabu Niiyama was born in 1930 in Shiroishi, the birthplace of the Yajirō kokeshi lineage. He trained under Tatsuo Niiyama, inheriting and continuing his family's long tradition of doll-making. Revered for his commitment to preserving the essence of Yajirō-style kokeshi, Manabu's work is marked by clean forms, symmetrical design, and restrained elegance.

While remaining faithful to traditional techniques, he brought a quiet refinement to his pieces, gently modernizing them without compromising their authenticity. His dolls are admired for their solid construction, masterful turning, and calm, contemplative expressions. Niiyama-san passed away in 2020, leaving behind a legacy deeply respected among collectors and artisans alike.
