K25051 - Yamagata by Eiichiro Takasaki 高崎栄一郎

A Yamagata-style kokeshi by Eiichiro Takasaki is a refined example of regional craftsmanship, showcasing a cascading floral design in vivid red across the body—an elegant contrast to the soft natural wood finish. The doll’s expression is delicate and composed, with subtly drawn features and short bangs framed by traditional black side locks, typical of the Yamagata-kei style.

The red blossoms finely brushed and evenly spaced, are a hallmark of Takasaki's gentle, painterly technique. The body is cylindrical and slightly tapered, maintaining a classic silhouette that highlights the artist’s skilled turning and balanced design.

Eiichiro Takasaki 高崎栄一郎 born on September 25, 1904, in Yamagata City, Eiichiro Takasaki was the third son of a kimono merchant and grew up surrounded by traditional crafts. Thanks to his father's close friendship with master woodworker Kobayashi Kichitaro, Eiichiro became an apprentice under Kichitaro in 1916, training alongside future greats like Kuriyama Ichitaro and Saito Torazo.

He spent much of his early life honing his skills in woodturning across the Tōhoku region, working on both everyday wooden goods and industrial components, including mint containers and woodpipes. Although his early career did not focus on kokeshi, he returned to the craft later in life, eventually becoming deeply involved in its preservation and promotion.

Following the passing of Shibata Hajime, he was appointed the second chairman of the Yamagata Kokeshi Association in 1977, underscoring his respected status in the community. He passed away in 1997 at the age of 94, leaving behind a legacy of refined artistry and dedication to the Yamagata tradition.
