K25050 - Sasano Ittobori hawk wood carving
This stunning piece is a traditional Sasano Ittobori (笹野一刀彫) wood carving by renowned craftsman Gorō Takahashi (高橋五郎). Originating from Yonezawa in Yamagata Prefecture, Sasano Ittobori is a folk art known for its single-knife carving technique and symbolic motifs.
According to local legend, it has been passed down as a fire talisman and lucky charm since the founding of Sasano Kannon-do Temple, which is said to have been founded in 806 ( the first year of the Daidō era), and is said to have a tradition dating back more than 1,000 years. Traditional craftsmen carefully carve each piece of “Koshiabura” wood using only a single blade called a “Sarukiri”.
The subject of this piece is a hawk (鷹, taka) a powerful symbol of strength, courage, and good fortune in Japanese culture. The hawk is carved from a single block of wood and painted with striking black and yellow patterns. The most impressive detail lies in the exquisitely layered wings and tail, made by slicing thin, curled layers into the wood to mimic feathers, showcasing the carver’s refined skill and the unique aesthetic of this craft tradition.
