A Kijiyama-style kokeshi from 1980s by Takematsu Igawa is a nostalgic homage to pre-war folk artistry. The doll features a serene and gentle expression, with slanted, dreamy eyes and a soft smile, painted in fine, delicate brushstrokes. The black bobbed hairstyle frames the face in the typical Kijiyama-kei fashion.
The body is decorated with stylized floral motifs in red, inspired by Osugi Bokkō patterns, outlined by circular bands at the shoulders and base. The wood has developed a warm patina over time, giving the figure a lovely vintage character. The form is cylindrical with a slightly narrow shoulder, reflecting the rustic simplicity and charm of the Kijiyama lineage, as well as the influence of his teacher's works.
Takematsu Igawa (井川武松) was born on December 11, 1925, in Nishimonai, Akita Prefecture. After serving in World War II, he returned home in 1945 and trained under master woodturner Suzuki Kunizo in Yuzawa City. Though Kunizo was already suffering from poor eyesight and made few kokeshi during that time, Igawa absorbed his master’s techniques and patterns through observation.
Initially focusing on large-scale woodturning, Igawa only occasionally made kokeshi on request. However, in 1971, a collector's commission—along with old photographs and Kunizo’s references—sparked a revival of interest in traditional kokeshi-making. From then on, he faithfully recreated Kunizo-style Kijiyama kokeshi, often blending in subtle influences from Yajiro-style dolls and from Kunizo’s son, Kotaro Suzuki.
He continued to produce these nostalgic works up until his passing on February 1, 2008, at the age of 84. His kokeshi are appreciated for their heartfelt preservation of a fading tradition and their humble yet enduring artistry.
