Kokeshi at least 70 years old. Tsuneichi Suga (須賀恒一) was a Japanese artisan born on September 28, 1919, in Aone Onsen, Miyagi Prefecture. After graduating from higher elementary school in 1933, he managed a souvenir shop in Aone. In 1942, he was conscripted into the military and returned home in 1945. Starting in 1946, Suga began painting new-style kokeshi dolls and, by 1949, expanded to traditional styles, learning through observation rather than formal apprenticeship. He continued to paint kokeshi while running his souvenir business until his passing in 1963 at the age of 59. While specific details about Suga's individual kokeshi designs are limited, his works are recognized as part of the Togatta tradition. Togatta kokeshi are among the oldest styles, originating from the Togatta Onsen area in Miyagi Prefecture. These dolls typically feature a slender, cylindrical body with a slightly enlarged head. Common design elements include red and green circular patterns, known as "Rokuro" (lathe) lines, and floral motifs, particularly chrysanthemums. The wood is usually left in its natural color, showcasing the grain and texture. Size: 24.5 cm tall
