Bunkichi Satō 佐藤文吉 (1922-2008) was a highly respected Hijiori-style kokeshi artisan, known for his dedication to preserving and refining the Hijiori kokeshi tradition, which originates from Hijiori Onsen in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. His mother Toshio was the fifth daughter of Sato Mokichi of Togatta, and was adopted by Sato Bunroku at the age of three. During the postwar kokeshi boom of the 1950s and 60s, he was one of the most popular craftsmen. Bunkichi himself had a strong enthusiasm and passion for making kokeshi dolls, and from his efforts to improve the quality of his works, he even seemed to be putting his entire existence on kokeshi. Bunkichi Satō’s kokeshi dolls are distinguished by the classic Hijiori style, which a slender, slightly tapered body, often narrower at the base than other kokeshi types. A larger, rounded head, sometimes slightly flattened, giving the dolls a unique proportion. Distinctive facial expressions, often characterized by bold, arched eyebrows, almond-shaped eyes, and a small red mouth, conveying a sense of quiet dignity. Hand-painted floral or geometric patterns, primarily in red, black, and green, which may include peony blossoms, cherry blossoms, or delicate line work that enhances the doll’s graceful silhouette. As a master of the Hijiori school, Bunkichi Satō played a key role in preserving the techniques of this relatively rare kokeshi style. His works were known for their balance of precision and warmth, blending traditional craftsmanship with artistic individuality. Size: 25cm tall
