This elegant Sōsaku Kokeshi (創作こけし) was created by Kōjō Tanaka (田中晃常), a respected kokeshi artist from Gunma Prefecture whose work is admired for its warm expression, refined carving, and gentle sense of nostalgia.
Its cylindrical body is dressed in a stylized wooden kimono, the surface retaining a pronounced natural grain that adds depth and texture. The garment is decorated with softly painted plum blossoms floral motifs in red and white, their simple forms contrasting beautifully with the warm brown tones of the wood. The understated palette and restrained decoration give the piece a quiet, poetic elegance typical of mid-century creative kokeshi.
Kōjō Tanaka founded the Kōjō Kokeshi Kōbō (晃常こけし工房) in Yoshioka, Gunma Prefecture, establishing a family workshop dedicated to the creation of Sōsaku Kokeshi. The workshop continues today under the care of his son, Shigemi Tanaka, preserving the family's woodcraft tradition.
Tanaka's work is characterized by harmonious proportions, expressive but understated faces, and an ability to make the natural qualities of wood an essential part of the design. Rather than overwhelming the material with decoration, he allowed its grain, texture and warmth to contribute to the personality of each figure.
