K20148 - Shingata Kokeshi by Yasunori Nara 奈良靖規

This Shingata kokeshi by Yasunori Nara 奈良靖規  (1897–1985) reflects a thoughtful blend of folk tradition and personal artistic interpretation, shaped by the maker’s unique background outside the conventional kokeshi lineage.

The doll features a softly rounded head with a calm, introspective expression. The face is delicately rendered with fine, slightly asymmetrical eyes, gently arched brows, and a small pursed mouth, giving the figure a subtle, almost contemplative character. The hair is painted in a simplified style with a rounded fringe and side locks, accented by small red decorative strokes near the crown.

Born in 1897 in Oyu, Akita Prefecture, Yasunori Nara followed an unusual path for a kokeshi maker. Originally trained as an educator, he held various positions in teaching and public service before returning to his hometown after World War II. There, he established the Towada Craft Workshop, producing a wide range of wooden objects and collaborating with skilled craftsmen from different regions. Through observation and practice, he developed his own woodworking and painting skills.

Unlike traditional kokeshi artisans who inherited regional styles, Nara approached kokeshi as an independent creator, designing original forms and decorations. His works often carry a quiet intellectual and artistic sensibility, reflecting both his educational background and his engagement with broader cultural ideas.
