K20141 - Sōsaku Kokeshi by Kishi Sadao 岸貞男
This Sōsaku Kokeshi was created by Kishi Sadao, one of the most celebrated figures of the modern creative kokeshi movement. The piece is associated with Shimoda Port, whose coastal atmosphere often inspired works reflecting quiet scenery and reflective moods.
The doll displays Kishi’s distinctive balance of refined simplicity and poetic symbolism. The figure features a softly rounded head with delicately painted closed eyes and a small red mouth, conveying a peaceful, introspective expression. A small red ornament placed at the top of the head adds a playful accent and creates a striking focal point against the natural wood grain of the face and hair.
The body is slender and elongated, typical of Kishi’s elegant proportions. The upper garment is painted in a rich violet-purple tone, decorated with white floral motifs that evoke seasonal blossoms. Beneath this layer, the lower section reveals the natural wood surface decorated with subtle geometric or plant-like patterns, creating a harmonious transition between painted color and natural material.
Kishi Sadao (1932–1998) was born in Maebashi and became one of Japan’s most respected Sōsaku Kokeshi artists. Over the course of his career he produced hundreds of works that blended modern sculptural form with traditional symbolism drawn from nature. His achievements were widely recognized with prestigious honors, including the Prime Minister’s Award and the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award, acknowledging both his innovation and mastery of the kokeshi form.
This piece beautifully reflects Kishi’s artistic philosophy: clean lines, natural materials, and motifs inspired by the changing seasons, creating a work that feels both modern and deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetic tradition.
