K20127 - Naruko kokeshi by Mannojo Sakurai 桜井万之丞
This is a rare and historically significant Naruko-style kokeshi made by Mannojo Sakurai (桜井万之丞, 1891–1969) — one of the early post-Meiji period kokeshi craftsmen who played a foundational role in shaping the legacy of Naruko kokeshi.
Standing 21cm tall, this vintage piece features a classic, minimalist Naruko face with narrow, sleepy eyes and a delicate expression, complemented by subdued, time-worn maple leaf motifs on the body. The patina and wear speak to its age and authenticity, marking it as a true collector’s item from the early-to-mid 20th century.
Sakurai was born into a family of artisans in Naruko and trained under master woodworkers from a young age. His craftsmanship spanned beyond kokeshi into large-scale woodwork and lacquerware production. He worked across Yamagata, Kaminoyama, and Sendai before settling back in Naruko, where he contributed significantly to the revival and continuation of traditional kokeshi production after World War II.
His influence extended through teaching, collaboration, and support of postwar kokeshi efforts alongside other Naruko greats such as Takahashi Musashi and Okazaki Hitoshi. This piece not only represents his personal legacy but also reflects the deep roots of Naruko craftsmanship.
