K20124 - Sosaku Kokeshi by Aoki Ryoka 青木蓼華

This sōsaku kokeshi from 1978 titled “ひな菊 (Hinagiku – Daisy)” is a graceful work by Aoki Ryoka(青木蓼華), expressing her refined sensitivity to form, season, and gentle emotion.

The doll presents a softly rounded head with finely incised straight bangs and downcast eyes, creating a serene, introspective expression characteristic of Aoki’s work. A small bow ornament rests atop the head, adding a quiet charm and evoking the innocence suggested by the title Hinagiku, a flower associated with purity and modest beauty. Subtle touches of red at the cheeks and nose bring warmth and life to the calm face.

The body is elegantly proportioned and adorned with hand-painted daisy blossoms in white and red, accented by muted green leaves. These floral motifs are carefully balanced across the surface, allowing the natural wood grain to remain visible beneath the paint. One gently carved arm curves inward, suggesting a shy, contemplative gesture that enhances the doll’s tender presence.

Beginning her kokeshi-making journey in 1958, Aoki Ryoka has been widely recognized for her artistic excellence. She is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Prime Minister’s Award, and was honored with the Japanese Yellow Ribbon Medal of Honor for her dedication to traditional craft. Notably, eight of her works were acquired by the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Japan in 1975 and 1983.

As of 2022, Aoki Ryoka remains active in her craft at the age of 91, continuing to create sōsaku kokeshi that embody elegance, restraint, and a deep respect for Japanese aesthetic tradition. This piece stands as a beautiful example of her lifelong commitment to artistry and cultural continuity.
