K20122 - Zao by Ishiyama Kazuo 石山和夫

K20122 - Zao by Ishiyama Kazuo 石山和夫

This is a Zao-style kokeshi doll created by Ishiyama Kazuo (石山和夫, 1929–2017), a revered artisan and key figure in the postwar creative kokeshi (sōsaku kokeshi) movement. Standing 21cm tall, this piece is characterized by its warm, natural wood tones, restrained palette, and minimalist hand-painted motifs. The face, with its gently closed eyes and serene smile, is framed by stylized black hair, while the body features pine-like patterns in black—evoking traditional Japanese symbolism of longevity and endurance.

Born in Miyagi Prefecture, the heartland of kokeshi craft, Ishiyama Kazuo came of age during a period of cultural rebuilding after World War II. He embraced both traditional form and contemporary expression, helping to redefine kokeshi as both folk craft and collectible art. His works often emphasize subtle beauty, harmony, and balance, embodying wabi-sabi aesthetics. Throughout his life, Ishiyama exhibited widely in Japan and abroad, becoming a respected cultural ambassador for Japanese woodcraft.

This particular doll reflects his hallmark style: dignified, understated, and quietly poetic—an enduring tribute to Zao tradition and artistic vision.

Size: 6 x 6 x 21.5cm
