K20079 - Traditional Togatta by Jiro Sato 佐藤治郎
Traditional Kokeshi by Jiro Sato 佐藤治郎 (1915–2006) a representation of the Togatta-kei (遠刈田系) style—one of the oldest and most recognizable schools of kokeshi from Miyagi Prefecture.
True to Togatta tradition, the doll features a slender cylindrical body and a head slightly larger in proportion, with a distinct shoulder slope between the neck and torso. The face is adorned with a classic Togatta expression—arched eyebrows, narrow eyes, and a small red mouth—all delicately hand-painted to convey serenity and warmth.
The body and neck are beautifully painted with red flowers and vivid green leaves, and what makes this doll especially eye-catching is the inclusion of black deer silhouettes, adding a graceful and poetic touch. The soft polish and warm tones of the wood enhance the hand-painted elements, giving the piece both tactile charm and visual harmony.
Jiro Sato was born in 1915 in Togatta Onsen, Miyagi Prefecture, and trained under Sato Fumio and other local craftsmen. He played a significant role in the preservation and evolution of the Togatta kokeshi tradition, contributing to its recognition throughout Japan. He passed away in 2006, leaving behind a legacy of skilled craftsmanship, traditional form, and graceful design. His dolls remain cherished by collectors for their refined painting style, regional authenticity, and timeless beauty.
