Tokunaga Shinichi (徳永慎一), born in 1933, is a distinguished Japanese artisan renowned for crafting traditional Tsuchiyu-style kokeshi dolls. Originating from a farming family, Tokunaga apprenticed under master craftsman Nishiyama Kenichi, from whom he learned the intricate art of kokeshi-making. His creations are particularly noted for their cheerful expressions and the use of enju wood (Japanese pagoda tree), which imparts a warm, natural hue to the dolls. Many of his kokeshi designs feature a unique box-like structure, adding both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
