Born on February 1, 1937, in Tsuchiyu, Fukushima Prefecture, he was the second son of a farming family. His deep connection to his hometown's rich kokeshi heritage profoundly influenced his work. Watanabe's kokeshi dolls are celebrated for their adherence to the classic Tsuchiyu aesthetic, characterized by a slightly larger head and a tapered body adorned with hand-painted designs. The doll’s serene facial expression and delicate brushwork exemplify the artistry of Tsuchiyu kokeshi. A bold red chrysanthemum adorns the body, symbolizing longevity and rejuvenation. Tsuchiyu kokeshi have a slightly wider head and a rounded, tapering body, often decorated with stripes and vibrant colors like red, black, and purple.
