A Tsuchiyu-style kokeshi made by the esteemed artisan Tetsuo Watanabe 渡辺鉄男 (1937-2017). Known for his dedication to traditional craftsmanship, Watanabe’s work reflects the classic characteristics of the Tsuchiyu lineage, one of the oldest kokeshi styles from Fukushima Prefecture. He was a distinguished Japanese artisan renowned for his mastery in crafting traditional Tsuchiyu-style kokeshi dolls.
Born on February 1, 1937, in Tsuchiyu, Fukushima Prefecture, he was the second son of a farming family. His deep connection to his hometown's rich kokeshi heritage profoundly influenced his work. Watanabe's kokeshi dolls are celebrated for their adherence to the classic Tsuchiyu aesthetic, characterized by a slightly larger head and a tapered body adorned with hand-painted designs. The doll’s serene facial expression and delicate brushwork exemplify the artistry of Tsuchiyu kokeshi. A bold red chrysanthemum adorns the body, symbolizing longevity and rejuvenation. Tsuchiyu kokeshi have a slightly wider head and a rounded, tapering body, often decorated with stripes and vibrant colors like red, black, and purple. Each piece reflects his commitment to traditional craftsmanship and his personal artistic vision.
