Rare vintage monochrome kokeshi by Onuma Shoji 大沼昇治 (1932–1998). He was a traditional Japanese kokeshi craftsman, particularly known for his work in the Togatta-style kokeshi. His creations are characterized by their simple yet refined designs and beautifully painted floral patterns. He was born May 17, 1932, as the fifth son of Onuma Hikotaro, a dairy farmer in Nanakahara, Katta County, Miyagi Prefecture. After graduating from elementary school in 1946, he helped his father with the dairy farming business, but in 1949, at the age of 18, he studied woodworking under Sato Fumio in Togatta-Shinchi.
