Naruko-style is one of the most iconic traditional kokeshi lineages from Naruko Onsen in Miyagi Prefecture. Created by Unkichi Suzuki 鈴木運吉, a highly respected postwar artisan, this doll exemplifies the refined floral motifs and graceful balance characteristic of the Naruko tradition.

The kokeshi features a tall, softly tapering body and a large, rounded head with finely drawn facial features a calm gaze, small red lips, and stylized black side hair. The floral patterns that adorn the body are vividly rendered in bold red, showcasing the iconic kiku (chrysanthemum) or peony-like motifs associated with Naruko dolls. A vibrant crown of brushstrokes also frames the top of the head, accentuating the overall symmetry and elegance.

What makes this doll particularly special is Suzuki’s delicate touch, his brushwork is both bold and restrained, with confident curves and steady hands, revealing his decades of experience. Unkichi Suzuki born in 1925 in Naruko, Miyagi Prefecture, Suzuki Unkichi began making kokeshi under the guidance of his father, Suzuki Jinjiro, and later trained with Kikuchi Yasutaro, a prominent master of Naruko-style kokeshi. Suzuki’s work is known for its strong traditionalism—preserving the original Naruko silhouette and decorative approach—while also showing subtle individual refinement in his facial expressions and pattern execution. He was an active and well-regarded artisan throughout the postwar period and became a fixture in local craft festivals and competitions. His dolls continue to be sought after by collectors for their authenticity, balance, and warmth.
