K20006 - Zao by Yasumitsu Omiya 大宮安光
A Vinatge Zao-style kokeshi, originating from the Tōgatta region of Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Zao kokeshi are known for their tall, slender bodies and distinctive painted patterns, often featuring floral motifs. This particular kokeshi features a striking red and green chrysanthemum pattern running down its cylindrical body, a hallmark of the Zao style. Yasumitsu Omiya (大宮安光) was a distinguished kokeshi artisan associated with the Zao Takayu tradition. Born on February 29, 1934, in Sogetsu, Yamagata Prefecture, he was the eldest son of Anjiro Omiya, a woodturner. While still in high school, Yasumitsu began his apprenticeship under his father, honing his skills in woodturning. After his father’s passing in 1952, he continued to refine his craft and took on the responsibility of mentoring his younger brothers, MasaYasu and Masataka Omiya. Initially focusing on producing new-style kokeshi doll blanks, Yasumitsu expanded his repertoire to include traditional kokeshi designs from December 1967. Size: 21.5 cm tall
