This Sōsaku Kokeshi was created by Sasayama Masue (笹山益惠) and distributed through Senshukai (千趣会), making it not only an expressive work of Japanese folk art but also a meaningful piece of Japan's postwar cultural history.

The doll portrays a graceful young girl dressed in a beautifully simplified kimono, her serene expression complemented by an elegant traditional hairstyle adorned with a delicate kanzashi hairpin featuring a soft pink ornament. The kimono is accented with vibrant geometric floral patterns in turquoise, black, crimson, and white, while the natural wood grain remains visible beneath the artwork, highlighting the warmth and beauty of the timber itself. Sasayama Masue's understated style captures a quiet sense of elegance, balancing minimalism with subtle decorative detail.

This piece was originally distributed through Senshukai's famous "Kokeshi Distribution Club" (こけし頒布会), a pioneering subscription service launched in the mid-1950s. Created primarily for working women, the program offered affordable monthly deliveries of thoughtfully designed kokeshi and Japanese folk crafts, allowing subscribers to gradually build personal collections. The concept became enormously successful, transforming kokeshi collecting into a nationwide cultural phenomenon and establishing a new model for mail-order retail in Japan.

The overwhelming popularity of these subscription programs played a foundational role in Senshukai's history and ultimately led to the development of its renowned lifestyle brand, Belle Maison, now one of Japan's best-known mail-order companies.
