K18151 - Sōsaku Kokeshi of Nipopo Dolls ニポポ人形
This vintage set of Sōsaku Kokeshi inspired by Nipopo Dolls (ニポポ人形) beautifully blends folk tradition with the expressive freedom of modern kokeshi artistry.
Carved from solid wood, the pair features compact, rounded forms with integrated ring elements, a distinctive characteristic reminiscent of traditional Nipopo figures from Hokkaidō. Each doll is adorned with finely incised patterns—geometric motifs and stylized plant forms—carefully carved into the surface and accentuated by a warm, hand-burnished patina. The natural grain of the wood is enhanced by subtle variations in tone, ranging from honeyed browns to deeper, smoked hues, giving each piece a rich sense of depth and age.
Their faces are minimally rendered yet full of personality, with gently closed or half-lidded eyes and faint smiles that evoke a sense of quiet contentment. The symmetry between the two figures suggests companionship, while their slight differences in carving and expression add individuality and charm.
Rooted in the Nipopo tradition of the Ainu-influenced regions of northern Japan, these dolls carry associations of protection, good fortune, and harmony with nature. Reinterpreted here through the lens of Sōsaku Kokeshi, they become both decorative objects and cultural artifacts, bridging regional folk heritage with modern artistic sensibility.
