K18145 - Naruko Kokeshi by Morio Takahashi 高橋盛雄
This Naruko kokeshi by Morio Takahashi 高橋盛雄 (1917–2000) is a vibrant example of the Takakan lineage, reflecting both strong tradition and the postwar revival spirit of Naruko.
The doll features a rounded head with a gentle, welcoming smile. The finely arched eyebrows, softly closed eyes, and small red mouth create a calm yet cheerful expression. The black hair framing the face is cleanly painted, accented with small red floral touches at the crown—an elegant Naruko hallmark.
Born on July 22, 1917, in Naruko as the eldest son of Takahashi Mori, Morio trained in woodworking under his father after high elementary school. Although he possessed strong technical skill, Morio became especially important as the head of the long-established Takakan shop. After wartime service and work as a teacher and government official, he returned to Naruko in the late 1940s and helped rebuild the kokeshi industry during the postwar boom. Rather than focusing solely on producing dolls himself, he trained and supported numerous apprentices—including Kazuo Moriya, Shigeru Oba, Teruyuki Takahashi, Koretaka Kakizawa, Kinji Endo, Yasuo Ito, Kunio Watanabe, Yoshikazu Takahashi, and his own son Toshifumi Takahashi—ensuring steady production and high standards at Takakan.
This piece reflects that legacy: bold, balanced, and confidently traditional—an enduring symbol of Takakan’s contribution to Naruko kokeshi history.
