K18137 - Sosaku Kokeshi by Usaburo Kokeshi Workshop 卯三郎

This Sōsaku kokeshi from Usaburo Kokeshi Workshop (卯三郎こけし工房) exemplifies the studio’s refined approach to modern creative kokeshi, where traditional craftsmanship is paired with a bold, sculptural presence.

It is a creative kokeshi-doll workshop and company based in Shintō Village, Gunma Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the best-known modern kokeshi makers, noted for blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary, character-based designs that appeal in Japan and overseas.

It  developed a distinctive style featuring rounded bodies and bobbed “okappa” hairstyles. From postwar decades onward, the company expanded from classic souvenir dolls into highly stylized “creative kokeshi,” helping popularize Gunma as a kokeshi-producing region beyond the traditional Tōhoku centers.

The body is adorned with understated yet expressive decorative elements: small, scattered red circular motifs and fine incised lines that appear almost symbolic, evoking falling petals, drifting seeds, or abstract traces of nature. These details are carved and finished with care, adding tactile depth and visual rhythm without overwhelming the form.

Size: 7 x 7 x 18cm
