K18124 - Traditional Naruko by Hideo Onuma 大沼秀雄
A Naruko-style kokeshi crafted by Hideo Onuma (大沼秀雄, 1930–2023), a revered artisan from one of Naruko’s historic kokeshi-making families.
Born into the lineage of famed kokeshi maker Onuma Iwataro, Hideo continued the legacy despite never having learned directly from his father, Takeo, who passed away during Hideo’s youth. After the war, he honed his skills under master Okazaki Saikichi and later learned the art of painting from his mother, Mitsuo. In 1958, he began producing kokeshi independently and faithfully upheld the traditional Onuma family style throughout his life.
This kokeshi features the hallmark traits of the Naruko tradition: a defined cylindrical body, expressive face, and a crown of red petals adorning the head. The body is decorated with soft red brushwork floral motifs, subtly faded, exuding a sense of rustic charm and quiet elegance. The overall form is both refined and warm, reflecting Hideo’s deep respect for tradition and his family’s heritage.
Created in his later years, this piece captures the enduring spirit of a master craftsman who dedicated his life to preserving Naruko’s cultural artistry.
