K18109 - Nanbu Hanamaki Kokeshi by Nagao Sato 佐藤長雄

This Nanbu-style Kokeshi is a rare creation by Nagao Sato, a dedicated craftsman whose kokeshi work reflected deep roots in tradition and heartfelt personal expression. This doll features a striking hand-painted plum blossom (tsubaki) motif on its body—one of Nagao's signature designs, inspired by the local flora of Hanamaki. The body is wrapped in bold, alternating bands of deep red and black, adding to its visual strength and balance.

The doll’s face is delicately drawn with a playful, knowing smile and expressive brushstrokes on the eyebrows and red cheeks. The hair is boldly painted in thick black lines with red accents that frame the face beautifully, a style reminiscent of vintage Nanbu aesthetic sensibilities. This combination of stylized floral design and tightly banded color fields evokes both traditional restraint and modern vibrancy.

Nagao Sato born in 1926, Nagao Sato followed a winding path into kokeshi-making. Originally trained in electrical work, his journey into woodcraft began serendipitously after visiting a woodcarver to repair motors. His curiosity led him to apprentice under Sato Torakichi, a devout Christian and skilled woodworker who had trained under Sato Mokichi, a prominent Togatta artisan. In 1948, Nagao bought a potter’s wheel with his last 800 yen to begin his apprenticeship—a decision that would shape his life.

Despite health struggles later in life, including chronic diabetes, Sato continued crafting kokeshi into the early 1990s. He passed away around 2008, leaving behind a legacy that bridges multiple kokeshi traditions with creativity and care.
