K18103 - Naruko by Masumi Matsuda 松田真澄
A kokeshi by Masumi Matsuda represents the Naruko-kei tradition, one of the most iconic and recognizable schools of kokeshi-making. The doll is beautifully turned with a slender, flared body and a soft, polished surface that highlights the natural wood grain. Painted in classic black sumi-e brushwork, the body is adorned with a striking floral motif, typically chrysanthemums or peonies, rendered in bold, detailed strokes. A thick double black band borders the top and bottom of the body, enhancing the sense of formality and elegance.
The face, with its delicately arched eyebrows, almond-shaped eyes, and slightly smiling expression, reflects the gentle spirit of Naruko kokeshi. A chrysanthemum crest decorates the crown of the head—another hallmark of this lineage. This piece demonstrates refined skill and a deep respect for traditional aesthetics.
Masumi Matsuda (松田真澄), born in 1959, is a respected kokeshi artist working in the Naruko tradition from Miyagi Prefecture. Coming from a lineage of kokeshi makers, he trained under seasoned craftsmen and eventually developed his own distinguished style rooted in tradition but marked by clean, elegant lines and balanced design.
His works are celebrated for their expressive floral decorations and tranquil facial expressions, often using darker pigments for a dignified, composed impression. Matsuda continues to create kokeshi in the Naruko region, preserving one of Japan’s most cherished folk art traditions while subtly infusing his own artistic sensibilities. His dolls are widely appreciated by collectors for their craftsmanship and quiet charm.
