A traditional Hijiori-style kokeshi by Hidehiro Sato features a gentle, smiling expression and a vibrantly painted body decorated with soft, layered floral motifs in pinks, reds, and greens. The brushwork has a uniquely dreamy quality, layered and textural, which gives the flowers a soft, almost watercolor-like appearance. The doll's expressive face, framed by bold black bangs and red head detailing, radiates warmth and whimsy.

With its slender proportions and flowing decoration, this piece embodies the quiet, rustic elegance typical of Hijiori kokeshi, a lesser-known but deeply charming branch of the Yamagata family of kokeshi traditions.

Hidehiro Sato born on February 16, 1951, in Togatta-Shinchi, Hidehiro Sato is the eldest son of kokeshi artisan Sato Fumio and grandson of the renowned Sato Ushizo, under whom he trained after completing middle school in 1966. He was exposed to the art of woodcarving from a young age and began producing works for his grandfather Ushizo in his teens.

Although Hidehiro temporarily left kokeshi making during a five-year stint in Tokyo (1971–1975), he returned to his roots upon marriage and rejoined the family’s kokeshi-making business, Ushizoan, based in Shinchi. His wife, Kimiko, also began making kokeshi around 1980, continuing the family tradition.

Sato’s style retains the legacy of his grandfather’s Hijiori characteristics while incorporating a gentle, modern charm. His brushwork is thoughtful and steady, with a particular softness in facial expression and floral patterns. Hidehiro Sato’s dolls are treasured for their nostalgic warmth and adherence to a fading regional style.
