K18092 - Naruko by Kunimi Sugawara 菅原くにみ
A Naruko kokeshi by the late artisan Kunimi Sugawara (菅原くにみ, 1948–2003) True to the Naruko tradition, the doll features a cylindrical body, a round head and a distinct red decorative ring at the neck hallmarks of this style.
The doll's face is charming and gentle, with crescent-shaped eyes and a warm smile that reflects the characteristically friendly Naruko expression. Her hair is rendered in deep black with stylized bangs and red ribbon-like elements framing the forehead, adding to the doll's cheerful presence.
The body is elegantly adorned with a bold, hand-painted floral motif of chrysanthemum executed in vibrant reds, complemented by dark green leaves. The layered blooms are painted with great precision and symmetry, showcasing Kunimi Sugawara’s skill and reverence for traditional design.
Kunimi Sugawara, born in 1948 in Naruko, was a rare female kokeshi artisan, trained by her husband Naoyoshi Sugawara (also a respected kokeshi maker). While she began assisting in the workshop, she eventually established her own distinctive style within the Naruko tradition. Her dolls are known for their delicate femininity, meticulous linework, and soft yet expressive faces. Though her career was sadly cut short by her passing in 2003, her works remain treasured by collectors for their warmth and artistry.
