K18089 - Yamagata by Kobayashi Seijirō 小林清次郎

A vintage Yamagata-style kokeshi features the distinctive craftsmanship of Kobayashi Seijirō (1918–2015) a kokeshi artisan from Yamagata Prefecture who was active primarily in the early-to-mid 20th century.

Known for his bold and stylized brushwork, Seijirō's dolls stand out for their strong visual presence and classic form. The doll displays a tall, cylindrical body with deep red horizontal bands at the shoulders and base. A large kanji character (寿, "kotobuki" meaning “longevity” or “congratulations”) is prominently painted in expressive calligraphy, which is a signature motif often seen in Seijirō’s work. This imparts not only visual drama but also a traditional message of good fortune.

The head is round and slightly larger in proportion, with sharply painted bangs and side hair, arched eyebrows, almond-shaped eyes, and a small red mouth—all conveying a calm, dignified expression typical of the Yamagata tradition. Kobayashi Seijirō was part of a generation of Yamagata artisans who helped shape and formalize the regional kokeshi identity. His works are now appreciated for their strong personality and historical significance.
