K18076 - Traditional Yamagata by Chujiro Kobayashi 小林忠次郎
Traditional Kokeshi by Chujirō Kobayashi (小林忠次郎, 1932–1999), who was active during the mid-to-late 20th century. With its soft expression and rich red hues, this piece captures both the warmth and subtlety of the Aomori-based Yamagata kokeshi tradition.
Chujirō Kobayashi born in 1932 in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, Kobayashi originally worked in a printing company before moving into kokeshi-making in 1963. He learned the craft from Yoshihiro Sakurai, a well-known Tsugaru kokeshi master. Kobayashi became known for his distinctive use of soft colors, floral motifs, and smooth cylindrical shapes. His dolls were often praised for their subtle elegance, and he was a regular contributor to exhibitions and craft events throughout his life. He continued producing kokeshi until his passing in 1999, leaving behind a legacy celebrated by collectors and folk art enthusiasts alike.
