K18068 - Togatta kokeshi by Masahiro Sato 佐藤正廣
Sato Masahiro (佐藤正廣), born in 1938 in Miyagi Prefecture, is a distinguished artisan of traditional Togatta-style kokeshi dolls. He apprenticed under Grand Masters Sato Tetsuro and Wagatsuma Kichisuke, honing his craft in this esteemed Japanese folk art. Togatta kokeshi are among the oldest styles, originating from the Togatta Onsen in Miyagi Prefecture. They are characterized by a narrow, columnar body that tapers at the shoulders, leading to a head wider than the body and more angular than round. Facial features typically include bangs split in two with side fringes, thin narrow eyes, and a distinctive split or cat-like nose. Decorative motifs often feature stylized chrysanthemums (kiku), plums (ume), and irises (ayame). Sato Masahiro’s creations exemplify these traditional characteristics. For instance, his Togatta-style Ejiko kokeshi showcases the natural qualities of the wood with minimal ornamentation. This piece features a separate upper body acting as a lid, with a head displaying the typical Togatta hairstyle and facial features. The container’s wide shoulders are adorned with a red chrysanthemum, and the piece is signed by Sato himself. Size: 18 cm tall
