Honma Tomegorō (本間留五郎, 1909–1974) was a distinguished artisan of traditional Naruko-style kokeshi dolls. Born on December 9, 1909, in Atsumi, Yamagata Prefecture, he began his apprenticeship under master craftsman Okazaki Hitoshi in 1924. After completing his training, Honma worked in various workshops before establishing his own practice in his hometown. He continued to work in woodworking for a long time after the war, but passed away on January 14, 1974. He was 66 years old when he passed away. Naruko kokeshi are characterized by their cylindrical bodies and rounded heads, often adorned with hand-painted motifs such as chrysanthemum flowers. A distinctive feature of this style is the squeaking sound produced when the head is turned, due to a specific fitting technique. Honma’s creations exemplify these traditional elements, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship and adherence to the Naruko aesthetic. Collectors highly value Honma Tomegorō’s kokeshi dolls for their authenticity and representation of the Naruko tradition. His works remain sought after by enthusiasts of Japanese folk art. Size: 18.5 cm tall
