K18038 - Naruko by Matsuko Takahashi 高橋松子
Matsuko Takahashi 高橋松子 (1920-2005) is a renowned kokeshi artisan from Naruko Onsen, Miyagi Prefecture, a region famous for its traditional Naruko-style kokeshi dolls. As one of the few female kokeshi makers in a traditionally male-dominated craft, she has gained recognition for her graceful designs, delicate hand-painting, and deep respect for tradition while incorporating her own artistic sensibilities. Born into a family of kokeshi artisans, Matsuko Takahashi was trained in the craft from a young age, mastering the precise techniques of woodturning, shaping, and painting under the guidance of experienced kokeshi masters. Her work embodies the classic Naruko style, characterized by a cylindrical body, a rounded head, and the signature "squeaking" sound when the head is turned. Her kokeshi dolls often feature with the elegant floral motifs, including cherry blossoms, chrysanthemums, and plum blossoms, painted with delicate brushwork. Soft yet expressive facial features, with finely drawn eyebrows, gentle almond-shaped eyes, and a small, subtle mouth, giving each doll a serene and timeless expression. Traditional red headbands (mizuhiki) around the doll’s head, a signature element of Naruko kokeshi. Matsuko Takahashi’s craftsmanship has been recognized in exhibitions and kokeshi competitions across Japan, where her work is praised for its refined balance between tradition and individuality. She remains dedicated to preserving the Naruko kokeshi heritage, ensuring that the techniques passed down through generations continue to thrive in modern times. Her dolls are cherished by collectors and enthusiasts for their artistic beauty, cultural significance, and exquisite craftsmanship.
