K15155 - Sosaku kokeshi by Yoshida Seiho 吉田斉穂
This striking sōsaku kokeshi by Yoshida Seiho (吉田斉穂) is a beautifully restrained work that reflects the refined modernism of Japan’s postwar creative kokeshi movement. Carved from richly grained wood with a deep natural finish, the doll possesses a sculptural presence defined by balance, geometry, and quiet emotion.
The most distinctive feature is the dramatic hair form — a large rounded coiffure crowned with a circular topknot, framing a delicately painted face partially hidden in shadow. The subtle expression, with narrow eyes and a fine red line of the nose, creates an atmosphere of contemplation and mystery. A suspended wooden medallion inscribed with Seiho’s signature further enhances the piece’s artisanal character and individuality.
Although little personal information about Yoshida Seiho has surfaced publicly, his artistic legacy speaks volumes. Author Yamanaka Noboru, in Creative Mingei Kokeshi, devoted several pages to Seiho’s work, praising his innovative style and recognizing him as one of the leading figures of the sōsaku movement during the 1960s. Noboru observed that while Seiho’s creations retained a nostalgic Tōhoku sensibility, they also embraced a distinctly modern and contemporary aesthetic.
This duality is beautifully expressed in the present piece. Its minimalist form recalls traditional folk craftsmanship, yet its bold silhouette and architectural composition feel unmistakably modern. The exposed wood grain, subdued palette, and elegant simplicity embody the ideals of shibui — an understated beauty that reveals itself gradually over time.
