This sōsaku kokeshi from Zenkō-ji Temple 善光寺 beautifully illustrates the beloved Japanese folk saying 「牛に引かれて善光寺参り」—“Led by an ox to visit Zenkō-ji.”

Carved from wood in a gently tapered, traditional kokeshi form, the doll features a serene young girl with softly closed eyes and a faint, contented smile. Her straight bobbed hair is simply incised, and a small red bow crowns her head, adding a playful, modern touch characteristic of the creative (sōsaku) kokeshi movement. The natural grain of the wood is left visible, giving warmth and authenticity to the piece.

On the body, a hand-painted scene depicts an ox walking before the temple grounds, with architectural elements suggesting Zenkō-ji in the background. The story behind “Ushi ni hikarete Zenkō-ji mairi” tells of a stubborn woman who chased after her ox when it ran off with cloth she had hung to dry; unknowingly, the animal led her to Zenkō-ji, where she experienced a spiritual awakening. The phrase has since come to mean being guided toward faith or good fortune by unexpected circumstances.

This kokeshi blends folk narrative and spiritual symbolism with the personal expression typical of sōsaku craftsmanship. Rather than strictly adhering to regional traditional styles, it reflects the artist’s creative interpretation—combining storytelling, calligraphy, and imagery into a single harmonious form. As an omiyage (souvenir) from Zenkō-ji, it serves not only as a decorative folk doll but also as a reminder of humility, serendipity, and the unseen guidance that leads one toward enlightenment.
