K15099 - Zao by Ishiyama Kazuo 石山和夫
This is a traditional Zao-style kokeshi crafted by Ishiyama Kazuo (石山和夫, 1929–2017), a renowned artisan whose work helped bridge the classical roots of kokeshi with the expressive spirit of the postwar creative movement. Measuring 16cm in height, this charming piece embodies the distinct features of the Zao lineage, known for its compact, cylindrical body and large, flat-topped head.
The face is delicately hand-painted with serene, almond-shaped eyes and fine-lined eyebrows, capturing a sense of calm and grace. Flanking the cheeks are soft floral accents, while the body is adorned with symmetrical chrysanthemum motifs in rich red tones—each petal rendered in deliberate, rhythmic strokes that demonstrate Ishiyama’s practiced hand and sense of balance.
Born in Miyagi Prefecture, a region central to kokeshi culture, Ishiyama Kazuo played a key role in elevating kokeshi dolls beyond regional craft, bringing them into the sphere of fine folk art. While he remained grounded in traditional forms like Zao, his approach often emphasized individuality and nuance, a hallmark of the sosaku kokeshi movement that flourished after World War II. Throughout his lifetime, Ishiyama participated in exhibitions across Japan and beyond, helping to broaden the appreciation of kokeshi as both cultural heritage and artistic expression.
