K15084 - Sōsaku Kokeshi by Sato Suigai 佐藤翠涯

This Sōsaku Kokeshi by Sato Suigai (佐藤翠涯) embodies the artist’s distinctive blend of elegance, warmth, and refined craftsmanship. The doll features a rounded, gently tilted head with a soft, expressive face — Suigai’s signature look of innocence and serenity. The hair is delicately painted with sweeping brushstrokes, while a small, carved bun is accented by a tiny red adornment, adding a whimsical touch.

Her vivid red kimono is highlighted with gold-etched foliage motifs that suggest both natural beauty and quiet sophistication. The use of the wood’s natural tone as a design element enhances the sense of harmony and balance — a hallmark of Suigai’s artistry.

Born in 1920 in Yoshioka Village, Gunma Prefecture, Suigai came from a silk-trading family and initially studied painting under Komuro Suiun, a renowned Japanese painter. His artistic career evolved through multiple disciplines — from painting and fashion design to engineering — before he began creating Sōsaku Kokeshi in 1946. This multidisciplinary background profoundly influenced his approach, blending technical precision with painterly sensitivity.

Suigai’s works are celebrated for their poetic use of form, elegant restraint, and gentle human emotion. Over his career, he received numerous honors, including the Prime Minister’s Prize (1966), and was recognized by Crown Prince Akihito, Japan’s Ministry of Trade, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. In 1970, he was designated a Holder of Excellent Technique and later served as a Cultural Properties Protection Committee member in Hakone.
