K15083 - RARE Sōsaku Kokeshi by Sansaku Sekiguchi 関口三作

RARE! This exquisite Sōsaku Kokeshi titled “Dōjo” (童女 – Little Girl) captures the essence of youthful innocence and quiet elegance, hallmarks of Sansaku Sekiguchi’s celebrated artistry.

The doll’s form is minimalist yet deeply expressive — her straight black hair frames a gentle, serene face with softly closed eyes and a small red mouth, conveying calm introspection. The subtle interplay of natural wood grain and muted tones gives the piece a timeless, contemplative quality.

Sansaku Sekiguchi (1925–2018) was one of Japan’s most influential Sōsaku Kokeshi masters and the only craftsman officially recognized by the Japanese government as a Master of Creative Kokeshi. Born in Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture, he originally trained in woodworking before dedicating himself to the art of kokeshi. His works are celebrated for their balance of traditional form and modern minimalism, often emphasizing purity of design and emotional depth over ornamentation.

Sekiguchi won numerous awards throughout his career — including the Prime Minister’s Award three times — and established the Sekiguchi Kokeshi Museum in Gunma, where his legacy continues through his children, who also became kokeshi artists. His dolls are now among the most sought-after by collectors worldwide, admired for their sculptural beauty and profound simplicity.

This piece, “Dōjo,” stands as a perfect example of Sekiguchi’s philosophy — the harmonious union of form, feeling, and craftsmanship, embodying both the tenderness of childhood and the quiet dignity of Japanese aesthetic tradition.
