Born in Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture, he originally trained in woodworking before dedicating himself to the art of kokeshi. His works are celebrated for their balance of traditional form and modern minimalism, often emphasizing purity of design and emotional depth over ornamentation.
Sekiguchi won numerous awards throughout his career — including the Prime Minister’s Award three times — and established the Sekiguchi Kokeshi Museum in Gunma, where his legacy continues through his children, who also became kokeshi artists.
