This striking pair of hand-carved wooden Kokeshi dolls represents the Ainu, the indigenous people of northern Japan, particularly Hokkaido. These vintage figures stand 15cm tall and embody the spiritual and artistic traditions of Ainu craft.
The male figure, with a deeply carved beard and traditional Ainu headband (sapanpe), reflects wisdom and guardianship. The female figure, with long flowing hair and a red-painted chest accent (symbolic of protection or vitality), wears the matampus, a ceremonial headwrap, and radiates strength and dignity.
Carved in bold, geometric lines and finished in a rich, earthy stain, the figures showcase characteristic Ainu motifs, such as the white etchings at the base resembling plant or flame designs. These stylized patterns are said to ward off evil spirits and protect the home.
Unlike the more commonly seen Kokeshi from Tohoku, Ainu Kokeshi are unique folk representations, often sold as souvenirs from Hokkaido in the mid-20th century. They embody not just aesthetic appeal but also cultural reverence and historical significance.
