K15074 - Traditional Hijiori Kokeshi by Kobayashi Sadao 小林定雄

This traditional Hijiori-style kokeshi by Kobayashi Sadao is a beautifully crafted example of the distinct elegance found in Yamagata’s folk doll traditions. The doll features a cheerful, rounded face with a serene, knowing smile—an expression often associated with the warmth and character of Hijiori artisans.

The most striking feature is the elaborate tower-like hairstyle, painted in a lustrous black lacquer with fine red and yellow detailing on top—reminiscent of a kanzashi (hairpin) or ceremonial hair ribbon. The body is adorned with a vibrant repeating floral motif in red and green, accented by multiple bands of fine lathe lines—a hallmark of traditional Hijiori aesthetic balance. These bold and symmetrical patterns reflect both the artisan’s precision and a joyful sense of movement.

Kobayashi Sadao born in 1933, Kobayashi Sadao was one of the prominent successors of the Hijiori Kokeshi tradition, a style rooted in the small hot spring village of Hijiori Onsen in the mountainous northern region of Yamagata Prefecture. Known for his consistency and skilled hand, Kobayashi-san's work displays a mastery of woodturning, with sharp forms, rhythmic brushwork, and well-balanced colors.

He was deeply respected for carrying forward the techniques taught by his predecessors while giving his dolls an expressive, gentle personality. His kokeshi often feature this signature hairstyle and tightly packed vertical floral designs, combining traditional motifs with a modern visual vibrancy.

Kobayashi Sadao passed away in 2020, but his legacy endures through his masterful contributions to the Hijiori lineage—each doll a quiet embodiment of northern Japan’s rich folkcraft culture.
